We have spoken about the tendency of Bimodal IT and the need for companies to adapt to the new reality of the increasingly digital world, with customers, devices and sensors always connected and generating huge amounts of data. In addition, the business cycle is accelerating with new products and services appearing almost daily.
This scenario has required companies greater adaptability and innovation. Technology and software development have become key weapons to business innovation, markets expansion and win and keep customers.
Bimodal IT is a significant mindset change from the traditional IT and requires some care and discipline in its adoption:
- Make room in IT to Mode 2, by creating a multi-functional team with the engagement of technical and business experts. Initially, Mode 2 should be protected from the pressures of IT daily operations to be able to structure and gain autonomy.
- Finance Mode 2 through an Innovation Fund without the need to prove ROI by traditional approaches. Mode 2 needs to have vision and strategic focus to innovate. The investment is made in the realization of this vision.
- If necessary, hire agility and innovation experts to bring methods, techniques and experience. To contract agile companies, changes are required in the purchases processes because the traditional models of procurement based on closed scope are ineffective in this scenario.
- Define success criteria for Mode 2. Its initiatives should relate to the digital strategy of the company. Just be on time and budget are not enough as success criteria. Learn about the market or customer behavior can be part of the success of the initiative.
- Build Mode 2 credibility through fast and impacting results. We have to be careful not to put Mode 2 on business margin, with irrelevant initiatives and no visibility.
- At the same time, start the renewal of legacy systems in Mode 1. Remodel systems, turning them into service platforms using APIs, replace them when possible by SaaS, intensively use cloud for infrastructure and services. The framework pace-layers can help to set priorities and organize actions.
- Do not hesitate between Modes 1 and 2. An intermediate position can give a false sense of security but will fail on both fronts: in the reliability necessary to Mode 1 as well the desired speed in Mode 2.
Secure and steady steps increase the success rate of the change. It is a great challenge, not only for IT leaders but also for all team members, since a change of this nature can only happen collaboratively when all are aligned to the same vision.
